San Marcos Softball Roars Into CIF Semifinals, 17-3

The bats erupted for the San Marcos softball team, as the Royals routed University Prep, 17-3, on Tuesday in Victorville to reach the CIF-SS Division 5 semifinals.

San Marcos jumped on University Prep with four runs in the first inning and continued to add runs in every inning. The Royals banged out 15 hits, including four home runs.

“We put the pressure on early, scoring four runs in the first on two singles and two hard-hit balls that were misplayed while hitting through the lineup,” coach Jeff Swann said. “hat coupled with some aggressive base running gave us a 4-0 lead.  We continued to run the bases aggressively throughout the game.”

Cassandra Perez led the offensive barrage, belting two homers, driving in five runs and scoring twice on a 3-for-5 day at the plate.

Kamilah Morales cracked the first home run of the day in the fourth inning, a line-drive blast to straightaway left field. Perez followed with her first homer in the 5th inning and Gigi Gritt joined the home-run derby with a blast in the sixth inning.  Perez hit her second homer in the seventh.

Five Royals had multiple-hit games. In addition to Perez, Caitlyn Early went 3-5 with two doubles, a RBI and three runs scored; Izabella Velasquez was 2-3 with a RBI and a run; Gritt homered, drove in two runs and scored three on a 2-4 day and Tiana Monaghan was 2-4 with a RBI and a run.

Allie Fryklund had her four-game shutout streak ended in the fourth inning, but she continued to dominate, striking out 18 batters while allowing four hits.

The Royals improve to 20-4 and will play Ocean View in Thursday’s semifinals. Ocean View upset  No. 2 seed Capistrano Valley 3-1.
