San Marcos Softball Pulls Out 11-10 Victory Over Agoura

February 21, 2024

San Marcos softball fought off a late comeback effort by Agoura to earn their first win of the season by a score of 11-10 on Wednesday on the road.

After going down 2-1 in the first inning, the Royals offense put up three runs in the second inning and held a 4-2 lead until the fifth, when both offenses exploded.

Both San Marcos and Agoura plated four runs in the fifth to bring the score to 8-6, and following some more fireworks in the sixth, the Royals held onto a 10-7 lead heading into the seventh.

San Marcos tacked on one more run in the top of the seventh, but the Agoura offense managed to get three runs across in the bottom half to cut the lead down to 11-10.

However, freshman Lucy Dessert buckled down and got the final out to earn the victory.

“I’m very proud of Lucy Dessert, our freshman pitcher that came in late in the game with the energy siding with Agoura and picked up her first career win in high school, San Marcos coach Emily Dietz said.

“She threw some great pitches and also contributed with an RBI single in her lone at-bat.”

Caitlyn Early led the Royals on offense with three hits and four RBI while both Tiana Monaghan and Charlotte Hastings hit home runs in the win.

Emma Foster, Kamilah Morales, Monaghan and Hastings all had two hits in the road victory as well. Hastings scored three times while Foster, Monaghan and Jessica Vega crossed the plate two times apiece.

“We expect to score a lot of runs each game, we just need to get a bit better defensively with keeping the other team off the base paths,” Dietz said. “I was proud of our resilience and determination to win today, there was a lot of uncertainty in terms of the field being ready, players being sick or injured, etc.

“Both teams kept punching back inning after inning and it was fun to watch.”
