The San Marcos Royals lost their season-opener to 2021 CIF-SS Division 1 champion Camarillo 3-0 Thursday.

Emma Foster was the first of the Royals to reach base, with an infield hit in the top of the seventh. She reached third base on a bunt by Gigi Gritt, before Camarillo retired the next three batters.

Freshman pitcher Kate Guerra scattered eight hits for San Marcos, and was backed up with some solid defense Tiana Monaghan at third base and Gritt behind the plate.

“We displayed some solid defense in the third inning with Kamilah Morales chasing down a ball hit to the fence, then hitting Caitlyn Early who relayed to Gritt at home to prevent a run from scoring,” San Marcos coach Jeff Swann said, “and again in the fourth inning with Guerra on the front end of a 1-6-3 double play again featuring Early and Cassandra Perez at first base.

Monaghan collected four assists and one putout, and Guerra had three assists and one putout.

San Marcos plays at Dos Pueblos on February 25, and then travels to the Simi Valley Manlet Tournament on February 26.
