San Marcos Hammers Softball All Over the Park in 12-7 Victory Over Ventura

San Marcos outslugged Ventura, 12-7, in a Channel League softball game at home on Wednesday.

After allowing three runs on four hits in the top of the first, the Royals responded with eight runs on six hits and two walks in the bottom of the inning.

Freshmen Charlotte Hastings and Jessica Vega each doubled, junior Emma Foster ripped a triple and Gigi Gritt collected two hits in the inning.

The Royals made it 9-3 in the second as freshman Solana Sandoval drove in Hastings with a single.

Ventura scored twice in the third, but San Marcos answered with another run in the fifth. Caitlyn Early smacked her fifth home run to give the Royals a 10-5 advantage.

Kate Guerra singled home Tiana Monaghan in the fifth and Vega hit an inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the six for a 12-6 lead.

Vega had a productive day, going 2-3 with a homer, double and two runs scored. Gritt and Monaghan each went 3-5 with a RBI and Guerra went 2-4 with a RBI.

Guerra went the distance in the circle, striking out two and allowing nine hits.

San Marcos improved to 5-1 overall and 2-1 league. The Royals are scheduled to play at Ventura on Friday and face Santa Clara and Santa Paula at home on Saturday.

“We plan to tarp the field before the rain in hopes of playing Saturday with the game times pushed out to 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. ,” said coach Jeff Swann.
