Kate Guerra pitched a one-hitter and faced the minimum number of batters in a 10-0 San Marcos softball win over Santa Ynez in five innings on Wednesday.
The lone baserunner allowed by Guerra was thrown out by Cassandra Perez on an attempted steal of second base in the third inning of the Channel League game.
“The defense played flawlessly behind Kate today, with Emma Foster continuing to make highlight reel plays,” said coach Jeff Swann.
Foster made a diving catch in the fifth inning and had another 9-3 assist from right field, her fifth of the season and third in two days.
Foster got the offense going in the first inning with a leadoff single. She moved to second on a bunt by Guerra and scored on a single by Caitlyn Early. A single by Kamilah Morales and a walk to Tiana Monaghan loaded the bases, and an infield ground ball out by Izabella Velasquez scored Early.
Early scored again in the third inning on a single by Morales, making it 3-0.
Seven runners scored in the bottom of the fourth inning on singles by Foster and Velasquez, back-to-back doubles down the third-base line by Morales and Monaghan, and towering home runs by Early (3-run homer) and Perez (2-run blast).
Morales went 3-3 with a double, a run and a RBI to pace the San Marcos offense. Early and Foster each had two hits.
San Marcos is 5-2 in Channel League and 6-6 overall.
