A nine-run second inning powered San Marcos softball to a 16-3 rout of Santa Paula in a non-league matchup on Saturday.
After a two-run homer by Santa Paula in the first inning and a scoreless bottom half of the frame, the Royals found themselves down 2-0.
However, Solana Sandoval sparked the offense with a line-drive two-run homer over the left-field fence, scoring Kamilah Morales and tying the game up.
From there, the San Marcos offense found its groove, batting around in the inning and plating nine runs to take control of the game.
The offensive onslaught continued for the Royals with three runs in the third and four runs in the fourth.
With a 13-run lead after the top of the fifth, San Marcos came away with the mercy-rule win.
Sandoval ended the day 3-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored while Tiana Monaghan had a big day at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with six RBI and three runs scored, including a towering two-run homer in the bottom of the third.
Emma Foster, Charlotte Hastings and Kate Guerra collected two hits apiece in the lopsided win, while Foster and Morales each drove in two runs.
Guerra pitched all five innings for the Royals, striking out seven batters in the process.
San Marcos will look to even up the season series against Dos Pueblos on Monday at 3:30 p.m. at home.
