Allie Fryklund pitched her second straight playoff shutout — and her fourth straight shutout overall — to put San Marcos in the quarterfinals of the CIF-SS Division 5 playoffs with a 2-0 win over Schurr in a defensive showdown on Saturday.
After a 7-0 no-hitter over Mayfield on Thursday, Fryklund yielded four hits and recorded seven strikeouts in the complete-game win Saturday.
The game was scoreless until the sixth inning, when Gigi Gritt got a base hit up the middle, then scored when Tiana Monaghan smacked a double down the left field line.
That was Monaghan’s second double of the game, as she also hit one to the wall in deep center in the first. She proved to be the catalyst for the Royals’ momentum in this one.
“She hits the ball hard,” San Marcos coach Jeff Swann said. “She has the quickest hands, and it was just a matter of time before she was going to hit the ball. she hits them like that in practice.”
Monaghan scored the second run, on a wild pitch after she was advanced by Issa Velasquez.
While the Spartans had runners on base in multiple innings, the Royals’ defense clamped down and left them stranded.
Royal right fielder Emma Foster was vital in this one, as she snagged multiple popups that weren’t exactly routine.
Once it came to crunch time, it was the Royals that displayed their poise and confidence.
“I leave it up to them,” said Swann said. “Everybody’s a leader on this team.”
San Marcos will play the quarterfinal Tuesday, against either Carter or University Prep.
