Caitlyn Early hit a walk-off home run to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning to give San Marcos a 7-6 win over Lompoc in a Channel League softball game on Wednesday.
Early went 4-for-5 for the day, adding two doubles and knocking in two runs.
In a see-saw contest, Lompoc scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 6-5 lead, and San Marcos tied the game in their half of the inning when Izabella Velasquez hit a bases-loaded single to left-center, scoring Tiana Monaghan. However, Kamilah Morales was thrown out at the plate trying to score the game-winner, and the inning later ended with a 6-6 tie.
Pitcher Allie Fryklund went the distance for San Marcos, allowing just two earned runs on eight hits.
“This was an exciting game to win,” Royals coach Jeff Swann said. “… I am especially pleased at how this team battled back after falling behind twice. That hasn’t happened a lot this season, and it was great to see the determination in each player when the game was on the line.”
San Marcos is now 5-3 overall. The team is 3-0 in Channel League and hosts Dos Pueblos on Friday.
