San Marcos broke through with the long ball, and Allie Fryklund provided solid pitching and good defense to lift San Marcos to a 2-0 win at Village Christian in a CIF Division 3 softball first-round playoff game on Thursday.
Claire Early hit a solo homer to center in the fourth inning and Fryklund hit a bomb over the fence in left-center for a 2-0 lead.
On the mound, Fryklund struck out seven, scattered seven hits and walked one. She also made some big plays with her glove, snaring bloop hits in the infield in the first, second and sixth innings.
The Royals made several plays in the field.
“Village Christian had runners on base in every inning but our defense did the job today, bolstered by some outstanding outfield play,” coach Jeff Swann said. “Early made a nice all-out sprint catch of a fading fly ball to right center to prevent a run in the second inning.
“Maddy Leung made a fantastic over the shoulder catch of a deep fly ball to left to prevent another run from scoring in the fourth, and Desiree Teran made a beautiful outstretched catch of a ball hit to deep right center to also prevent a run from scoring.”
The Royals play at Long Beach Wilson in the second round on Tuesday.
