San Marcos Wins Nail-Biter over Lompoc to Stay Tied for First in Channel League

San Marcos won a 9-8 see-saw contest at home against Lompoc in Channel League action Friday.

The Royals remain tied for first with Dos Pueblos with identical 12-1 records, and they play each other at DP on Tuesday.

San Marcos took a 5-0 lead in the second inning, including a two-RBI single by Kamilah Morales and an RBI single by Tiana Monaghan. The Royals stayed ahead, leading 7-3 in the fifth inning after an RBI single by Allie Fryklund.

Then Lompoc scored five in the top of the sixth inning on three doubles, a walk and two San Marcos errors to take in 8-7 lead.

Monaghan singled for San Marcos to lead off the bottom of the sixth, and Izabella Velasquez followed with a double. One out later, Cassandra Perez singled, scoring Monaghan. Another out later, Caitlyn Early doubled to score Velasquez to put the Royals back on top, 9-8.

Lompoc managed to get runners at second and third in the top of the seventh with one out, but Fryklund induced two pop-ups to herself to end the game.

Fryklund recorded seven strikeouts on the mound, scattering 10 hits and allowing three earned runs.

Both teams committed five errors.

Monaghan was 3-for-4 with a run scored, Early 2-for-4 with a double, run scored and RBI, Velasquez 2-for-4 with a double and run scored, and Emma Foster 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
